“It’s a symphony of colors, a cry of dust that exalts a spark of sparks”
Edwin Michel, Mauritian author

Lost in the middle of the most typical and authentic place of the island, Chamarel is a very small village which is located in the south-west of the island. And who says Chamarel, also says the Gorges of the Black River, the Rhumerie de Chamarel, the Chamarel waterfall… .and 7 coloured Earth…..

Born from a volcanic land, 7 coloured earth finds its colors in a very rare geological curiosity: bare earth dunes, with different colors (brown, ocher, pink, orange, mauve …). They are volcanic ash exposed by erosion. Try to mix them, a few hours later they are separated fiercely retaking their original shade.

This natural phenomenon is the product deeply decomposed and shaped by the gully basalt. The hot and humid climate favored the decomposition of basalt to clay.

Giant tortoises can also be observed for the enjoyment of toddlers.

CHAMAREL WATERFALL

This waterfall is fed by the rivers St Denis and Salt Meat and is about 100 meters high. The period with the greatest flow is between December and April, due to summer showers and the hurricane period. A promontory offers an overhanging viewpoint; it is also possible to go down and swim there.
